The short version: Most LASIK patients are cleared to fly 24–48 hours after surgery. The procedure itself is not affected by air travel — but airplane cabins have very low humidity (10–20%), which can worsen post-surgical dry eye. Bring preservative-free drops, blink deliberately, and you will be fine. Medellín's short flight distance from major US cities is a real advantage over other medical tourism destinations.
When Are You Cleared to Fly?
There is no absolute medical prohibition on flying after LASIK. Your surgeon will evaluate your healing at the 24-hour or 48-hour follow-up and provide clearance based on your individual recovery. Most patients are cleared to fly by Day 3–5, with many surgeons comfortable with flights as early as 48 hours post-op.
The standard trip template for Medellín — consultation Day 1, surgery Day 2, follow-up Day 3, fly home Day 5–7 — gives you ample recovery time before flying.
| Procedure | Typical Flight Clearance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LASIK | 24–48 hours post-op | Most conservative surgeons say 48 hours |
| SMILE | 24–48 hours post-op | Similar to LASIK |
| PRK | 5–7 days post-op | Epithelium needs time to regenerate |
| Cataract surgery | 48–72 hours post-op | Surgeon dependent |
The Cabin Environment Challenge
Airplane cabins are pressurised to the equivalent of 6,000–8,000 feet altitude, with humidity levels between 10% and 20% — drier than the Sahara Desert. This environment accelerates tear film evaporation, which is the primary concern for recently-operated eyes.
Cabin pressure
After LASIK, the corneal flap is healing and the reshaped tissue is settling. The reduced cabin pressure (equivalent to approximately 75–80% of sea-level pressure) does not meaningfully affect this process. There is no evidence that cabin pressure displacement affects LASIK outcomes. Your eyes are not pressurised vessels — they equilibrate with ambient pressure naturally.
Cabin dryness
This is the real issue. At 10–20% humidity, your already-compromised tear film evaporates faster. Symptoms can include gritty or burning sensation, blurred vision (temporary — caused by dry corneal surface), increased light sensitivity, and a desire to close your eyes. None of these are dangerous, but they are uncomfortable.
How to Fly Comfortably After LASIK
- Preservative-free artificial tears: Apply every 20–30 minutes during the flight. Single-use vials (like Refresh Optive or Systane Ultra preservative-free) are TSA-compliant and easy to use. Bring at least 10 vials for a flight — more is better.
- Blink deliberately: Studies show people blink 60% less when staring at screens or sleeping. Set a mental reminder to blink fully and frequently.
- Close your eyes when possible: Sleeping during the flight is ideal. Your eyes stay lubricated behind closed lids.
- Avoid alcohol: Alcohol dehydrates you systemically, reducing tear production. Skip the in-flight drinks.
- Stay hydrated: Drink water throughout the flight — at least 250ml per hour.
- Wear your UV sunglasses: Even inside the plane, especially if you have a window seat. UV penetrates airplane windows, and your cornea is still UV-sensitive during recovery.
- Skip the contacts: Obviously — you just had surgery to stop wearing them. But worth noting: do not put in contact lenses before flying, even if you still have some.
Book an aisle seat so you can access your carry-on bag (with your eye drops) easily and move around the cabin without climbing over other passengers. This also avoids the strong UV exposure from a window seat.
Medellín's Flight Distance Advantage
One underappreciated reason Medellín works so well for medical tourism is its proximity to the US. Short flights mean less time in the drying cabin environment and more time recovering in Medellín's humid, comfortable climate before heading home.
| Origin City | Flight Time to Medellín | Direct Flights? |
|---|---|---|
| Miami, FL | 3 hours | Yes — multiple daily |
| Fort Lauderdale, FL | 3 hours | Yes |
| Houston, TX | 4.5 hours | Yes |
| New York (JFK) | 5 hours | Yes |
| Los Angeles, CA | 6 hours | Connecting via Miami or Bogotá |
| Toronto, Canada | 5.5 hours | Yes (seasonal) |
Compare this to other medical tourism destinations: Istanbul is 10–12 hours from the US, Bangkok is 17–20 hours, and even Mexico City is 4–5 hours with fewer direct routes. Shorter flights mean less cabin dryness exposure and a quicker, more comfortable journey home.
When to Be Cautious
In rare cases, your surgeon may recommend delaying your flight:
- Slow healing: If your follow-up exam shows the flap is not adhering properly or there is unusual inflammation
- PRK patients: The epithelium needs more time to regenerate — flying too early can cause significant discomfort
- Complications: Any post-operative complication (infection, epithelial ingrowth, significant haze) may require extended monitoring
These scenarios are uncommon (affecting fewer than 2% of patients), but they are the reason you should build flexibility into your travel plans. Book refundable or changeable flights when possible.
