The short version: El Poblado and Laureles are the two best neighbourhoods for LASIK recovery in Medellín. Both are walkable, safe, close to pharmacies, and full of comfortable Airbnb options. El Poblado is more international and clinic-adjacent. Laureles is quieter, cheaper, and more authentically Colombian. Either works — here is how to choose and what to look for in your accommodation.
What Your Post-LASIK Accommodation Needs
You are not recovering from major surgery. LASIK recovery is mild — you can walk, eat out, and enjoy the city by Day 2. But you do need an accommodation that supports comfortable healing:
- Blackout capability: Your eyes will be light-sensitive for the first 24–48 hours. Dark curtains or blinds are essential for sleeping and resting.
- Clean environment: Dust, pet hair, and smoke can irritate healing eyes. Choose a non-smoking apartment, ideally without pets.
- Air circulation: Avoid sealed, heavily air-conditioned spaces. Medellín's climate rarely requires AC — open-window apartments with natural airflow are ideal for maintaining good humidity levels around your eyes.
- Walking distance to essentials: You will not want to take long taxi rides with sensitive eyes. A pharmacy, restaurants, and a supermarket within 5–10 minutes on foot makes recovery much easier.
- Stable WiFi: You will be spending the first 24 hours resting — and you can listen to podcasts, audiobooks, or music even if screens are off-limits.
El Poblado: The International Choice
El Poblado is where most international visitors stay, and for good reason. The neighbourhood has the highest concentration of English-friendly services, international restaurants, modern apartment buildings, and is closest to several major ophthalmology clinics.
Advantages for LASIK patients:
- Walking distance to Clínica de Oftalmología Sandiego and other major eye clinics
- Provenza area has dozens of restaurants and cafés for gentle post-op walks
- Pharmacies (Droguería Olímpica, La Rebaja, Cruz Verde) are everywhere
- Uber and DiDi are instantly available for clinic appointments
- English is widely spoken in shops and restaurants
Best areas within El Poblado:
Provenza is the sweet spot — walkable, vibrant, restaurant-dense, and centrally located. Manila is quieter while still being walking distance to Provenza. El Tesoro area is higher up the hill, slightly less walkable but close to El Tesoro mall (which has pharmacies and a food court).
Airbnb pricing: $40–$75/night for a well-reviewed one-bedroom apartment. For a 7-night stay, budget $280–$525.
Laureles: The Quieter Alternative
Laureles-Estadio is Medellín's most liveable neighbourhood. It is flatter than El Poblado (making it more walkable), more authentically Colombian, and 20–30% cheaper for accommodation. If you want a recovery experience that feels less touristy, Laureles is excellent.
Advantages for LASIK patients:
- Extremely flat and walkable — no steep hills to navigate with sensitive eyes
- Dense with local restaurants, bakeries, and pharmacies
- Quieter streets with less traffic noise and exhaust
- Metro station (Estadio) provides easy access to the rest of the city
- Better value accommodation
Airbnb pricing: $30–$55/night for a one-bedroom. Budget $210–$385 for 7 nights.

What to Look for in Your Airbnb Listing
When booking, search specifically for these features:
- "Blackout curtains" or "cortinas blackout" — ask the host if not listed
- No pets, no smoking — filter for these in Airbnb search
- Reviews mentioning cleanliness — post-LASIK eyes are sensitive to dust
- A balcony or outdoor space — fresh air without the need to walk is valuable on Day 1
- Building with a portería (doorman) — adds security and someone who can accept pharmacy deliveries
Message your Airbnb host before booking and explain you are recovering from eye surgery. Ask about blackout curtains and building cleanliness. Most Medellín hosts are exceptionally accommodating and may even stock extra pillows for propped-up sleeping.
Pharmacy Access Is Everywhere
You will need preservative-free artificial tears, and your surgeon will prescribe antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops. Medellín has pharmacies on virtually every block — Droguería Olímpica, Cruz Verde, and La Rebaja are the major chains, and most stay open until 9–10pm. Many medications available only by prescription in the US are available over the counter in Colombia, making pharmacy runs straightforward.
The key post-op supplies to keep stocked:
- Preservative-free artificial tears (lágrimas artificiales sin preservantes)
- Prescribed antibiotic drops (your surgeon provides these)
- Prescribed anti-inflammatory drops
- Protective eye shields for sleeping (provided by your clinic)
Getting Between Your Accommodation and Clinic
On surgery day, you will need someone to bring you home — you cannot see well enough to navigate alone immediately after the procedure. Options:
- Our concierge service can arrange clinic transportation
- Uber/DiDi are reliable and inexpensive in Medellín ($3–$6 for most trips within the city)
- Your Airbnb host may be able to recommend a trusted local driver
For follow-up appointments on Days 3 and 5–7, you will be seeing well enough to navigate independently via Uber or on foot.
