ICL Surgery in Medellin: The Option When LASIK Says No

Very high prescription, thin corneas, or dry eyes do not end the conversation. They change it to a lens that sits inside the eye.

Updated September 18, 2026 · 7 min read · Reviewed against published sources
The short versionAn ICL is a thin lens placed behind the iris and in front of your natural lens. It suits high myopia and some corneas that cannot take a laser. Colombian 2026 price bands run COP 15 to 30 million for both eyes ($4,838 to $9,676), roughly double femto-LASIK. The lens is ordered to your measurements, so plan an exam-then-surgery sequence and a longer stay than LASIK.

What an ICL is

A phakic intraocular lens adds focusing power without removing anything. The most widely used family is STAAR Surgical's Visian ICL and EVO ICL, made of a collagen copolymer (collamer). The surgeon folds the lens, inserts it through a small incision under numbing drops, and positions it behind the iris. Your cornea is untouched and your natural lens stays in place, which is why the procedure is described as additive and, if needed, removable.

One published clinic description of the EVO ICL gives treatable ranges up to about minus 18 diopters of myopia, plus 10 of hyperopia, and 6 of astigmatism, and notes use in stable keratoconus and in dry-eye patients who are poor laser candidates. Your surgeon's criteria and your measurements decide what applies to you.

Why the premium? A meaningful share of the fee is hardware: a manufactured lens ordered per eye to your sizing. The toric question also matters. If your astigmatism is corrected inside the lens, the lens costs more. Ask whether your quote assumes a spherical or toric implant.

Because the lens is chosen from your measurements, few clinics will give a firm ICL price before biometry. Some can pull common powers from stock; others order from abroad, which can add days or weeks. Ask at the first contact whether your likely lens is typically in stock and how many days to allow. Many surgeons do the eyes on separate days, so budget more time than a LASIK trip and keep the early follow-ups inside your stay.

The brand-advertising note. Colombian health-advertising rules limit how clinics promote medical devices to consumers, so you may not see lens brands splashed across a website. Ask the coordinator which lens family is implanted, and confirm the device has INVIMA sanitary registration.

Questions that separate serious ICL clinics

  1. How many phakic lens implants does the operating surgeon perform each year?
  2. Which sizing method do you use, and what happens if the vault (the lens clearance) is outside target?
  3. Which follow-up checks can my eye doctor at home do, with results sent to you?
  4. What is the all-in price per eye, including lens, facility, medications, and included visits?

Frequently asked questions

How much does ICL cost in Medellin?

Colombian 2026 survey bands put phakic lens surgery at COP 15 to 30 million for both eyes, about $4,838 to $9,676 at the Sep 16, 2026 TRM. Firm quotes come after biometry.

Is ICL better than LASIK?

Neither is better in general. ICL suits prescriptions and corneas that LASIK cannot safely treat. For moderate prescriptions with healthy corneas, laser surgery is usually simpler and cheaper.

How long should I stay in Medellin for ICL?

Longer than for LASIK. Allow time for biometry, possible lens ordering, surgery on each eye, and the early follow-ups. Ask the clinic for a day-by-day plan before booking.

Can an ICL be removed?

Yes. It can be removed or exchanged by a surgeon if needed, because the cornea and natural lens are left in place. Removal is still surgery.
